Nonselective Herbicide Overview

Global Herbicide Market Value (USD $Billions)

No Data Found

The global herbicides market is expected to garner a revenue of 50 billion by 2026 with approximately 6.5% growth during the period of 2020 to 2026.

Nonselective herbicides are typically used for postemergence annual and perennial weed control. Any green plant that they contact will be injured or killed. The level of weed control resulting from these herbicides depends upon the chemical characteristics, mode of action, plant size and species, and the season of application. There are several postemergence herbicides that are available in the market for conventional or organic uses, however, five postemergence herbicides dominate most of the nonselective herbicide market.

Paraquat is a contact herbicide that is widely used to control weeds in many agricultural and non-agricultural use sites. It is also used as a defoliant on crops, like cotton, prior to harvest. Because paraquat has no systemic activity, it cannot control perennial weeds. There are no homeowner uses and no products registered for application in residential areas.

Diquat is a landscape and aquatic herbicide that provides control of a variety of aquatic weeds, for non-selective weed control in turf and landscapes, and as a trim and edge tool. It is also used for crop desiccation.

Glyphosate is a widely used herbicide around the world. Most often sold as “Roundup®” it is a systemic, postemergence herbicide that kills annual and perennial broadleaf and grass weeds. Glyphosate is relatively nonselective. Glyphosate is widely used to control weeds in glyphosate-resistant crops, orchards, turf, landscape, industrial areas, aquatic settings, forests, rangeland, burndown treatments, and pastures. The extensive use of glyphosate led to the development of many glyphosate-resistant weeds. The main disadvantage of glyphosate is that small amounts of spray drift can severely injure certain nontarget plants. In addition, there is a health concern and legal litigation regarding the use of glyphosate. Several Asian and European countries restrict glyphosate use.

Glufosinate-ammonium is also a nonselective herbicide. It is a broad-spectrum postemergence herbicide that controls most annual grasses and broadleaf weeds.

Carfentrazone is utilized to kill broadleaf weeds, it is also used as burndown herbicide. It is a contact herbicide that generally provides additional control when mixed with glyphosate or glufosinate.
